TV GUIDE: Game of Thrones: How to Speak (and Curse!) Like the Dothraki

by Hanh Nguyen

Athchomar chomakaan, khal vezhven! (Welcome, great khal!)

After last week's Game of Thrones stayed firmly in Westeros, Sunday's episode (airing at 9/8c on HBO) returns to the land of the Dothraki, those nomadic warriors across the Narrow Sea who value a good piece of horseflesh for both riding and eating.

But we're not here to discuss Dothraki livestock recipes, as delicious as they may be. Instead, we shall delve into their language, a liquid-sounding tongue inspired by the limited Dothraki vocabulary, as seen in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels on which Thrones is based. Executive producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, with the help of the Language Creation Society's mononymous Sai, selected David J. Peterson to create and expand the Dothraki language, which now stands at 2,763 words at the last count, for the HBO series...

SUPERNATURAL - TV GUIDE: Supernatural Boss on Finale: "Characters That People Like Will Be Killed"

May 19, 2011
by Hanh Nguyen

Supernatural's war in Heaven is upon us as the series airs its two-part finale on Friday (8/7c on The CW), and showrunner Sera Gamble promises some deaths, Sam's long-awaited breakdown and "a lot of Castiel" in both episodes.

Gamble wrote the night's first episode, "Let It Bleed," which introduces a new player -- at least historically -- into the series. Apparently, the late, real-life horror writer H.P. Lovecraft is somehow mixed up in the Winchesters' battle to keep Purgatory at bay. Anyone familiar with his Chthulu mythos will recognize that his terrifying creations fit right in with the Supernatural world.

In the second episode, "The Man Who Knew Too Much," we see the culmination of what's going on with Castiel and his season-long quest to oppose Raphael.

Check out what Gamble has to say about Season 6's finale event...

... TV Guide: What can you tease about the episode you wrote, "Let It Bleed"?

Sera Gamble: One of the big arcs we played this season for Dean, when we had first seen Dean (Jensen Ackles) this season, he had been retired for an entire year and was living with Lisa and Ben. He left them to resume hunting and be with Sam. While we're glad he did that because we want to watch him on the show and this in many ways is clearly the right choice for everyone, I think there's a part that he left behind with them. More to the point, just having been in their lives put them in danger. He has had this fear that something bad might happen to them. In Episode 21, basically long-story-short, that comes to pass. They are unexpectedly taken and he has to deal with that. He has to deal with the repercussions of having been in their lives. It's basically Dean's worst nightmare...

HAWAII FIVE-0 - CBS WATCH MAGAZINE: High Five-0

With a sizzling cast, blistering action scenes and tropical setting, CBS’ new hit drama brings the heat—and gets ready to turn it up for Season 2

High Five-0

by Hud Morgan

AT FIRST, it seems like just another perfect day in Honolulu: wind rustling the palm trees, waves lapping against the shore of Fisherman’s Wharf, ceaseless blue sky overhead. Then, out of nowhere: “Fire in the hole!” And a moment later, a car on the pier explodes in a huge fireball, sending black smoke billowing upward and frightened tourists running for cover. Trouble in paradise!

Welcome to the set of Hawaii Five-0, CBS’ hit new reboot about attractive cops in an attractive place solving unattractive crimes. Whether it’s car bombs or corruption, terrorism or treason, the guys and gal of Five-0—ex-Navy SEAL Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin), New Jersey transplant Danny “Danno” Williams (Scott Caan), local detective Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) and rookie Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park)—bend the rules to break a case every week. And break a few records, too: With an average of 13 million viewers per episode, Hawaii Five-0 is the highest-rated new drama on TV and the most-DVR’ed show of the season...

... “I THINK WE HAVE something going for us because we’re shooting in Hawaii, and there’s something about this place that’s eternal,” says Kim. “In the dead of winter, people will always want to see a beautiful location with good-looking people in bikinis. Every episode is like a postcard.” Of course, it isn’t just location, location, location. “We’re in a genre that people are familiar with—the procedural cop show—but we’ve got a combination of good stories, comedy and interesting characters...”

CBS WATCH MAGAZINE: Smallville’s Big Finish

by Matt Mitovich

As the longest-running superhero series in television history comes to an end, we give it a huge, Daily Planet-sized send-off

“WE DIDN’T FIND YOU, CLARK. YOU FOUND US.” With those words, spoken by Jonathan Kent in the Smallville pilot, a new take on the Superman saga found a home that would last for 10 years.

Developed for TV by Al Gough and Miles Millar, Smallville —which follows the adventures of Clark Kent in the fictional town of Smallville, Kan., before Clark becomes Superman—made its debut Oct. 16, 2001, on The WB. Fronted by Tom Welling and also starring Allison Mack (as Clark’s BFF Chloe Sullivan), Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang), Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) and John Schneider and Annette O’Toole (as Clark’s parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent), the first episode drew 8.4 million viewers—breaking the record for a bow on the 6-year-old netlet and proving that no amount of previous adaptations had quelled our fascination with Clark Kent’s story.

It’s wish fulfillment for every ‘kid’ out there,” offers Kelly Souders, who since Season 8 has served as showrunner with fellow executive producer Brian Peterson. (Both joined Smallville as writers in Season 2.) “So many heroes in mythology are gods or characters that are hard for the everyday person to connect with, but Clark is someone we can all relate to. We want to believe that heroes are made out of people like us.”

With Smallville set to end its decade-long saga this May on The CW, we spoke with many of those involved in getting the young man-who-would-be-Superman off the ground. Herewith, our Kryptonite-free tribute to one of the greatest superhero series in TV history...

TV GUIDE: The Mentalist's Amanda Righetti Thinks About That Crazy Finale

May 20, 2011
by Michael Logan

No contest. Patrick Jane killing Red John was the shocker event of The Mentalist's season ender Thursday night. But RJ wasn't the only corpse left lying there when the dust settled. In another stunning development, FBI agent Craig O'Laughlin (Eric Winter) was revealed to be Red John's mole and he, too, was shot dead, leaving his fiancée, CBI agent Grace Van Pelt, with some major trust issues.

"This is a life-changing, mind-bending experience for Van Pelt," says creator-exec producer Bruno Heller. "She will certainly come back next fall very damaged in some ways, but in other ways she will come out of this stronger and more ferocious."

Oh, yeah? Tell that to Amanda Righetti, the flame-haired beauty who plays Van Pelt. TV Guide Magazine spoke with the actress, who doesn't know what to think about her character's crappy luck with men...

Photobucket

... TV Guide Magazine: After all this, you'd think Van Pelt would be pretty screwed up. She already had the wedding dress! Will this destroy her confidence, both personally and professionally?

Righetti: That's kinda my question! How will she ever survive as a detective with such rotten radar? And I can't imagine her ever trusting a man again. She's always had daddy problems. And O'Laughlin isn't her first bad boyfriend. It might be time to give up. [Laughs] Van Pelt might have to try girls...

TV GUIDE: Spoiler Alert: Simon Baker Talks About The Mentalist's Shocking Season Finale

May 20, 2011
by Michael Logan

Did CBS cancel The Mentalist and forget to tell us? The smash-hit crime drama just wrapped its third season with Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) shooting and killing serial slayer Red John (Bradley Whitford) in the crowded food court of a shopping mall. But wasn't Jane's vengeful pursuit of Red John his raison d'ĂŞtre and the very point of this series? How could the plot wrap up so soon? Then again, did Jane kill the real Red John? Whether he did or he didn't, he's in deep doo-doo.

"Patrick has just murdered a man in cold blood in front of hundreds of people and next season he will be tried in court," creator Bruno Heller tells us. "We won't dodge any issues. Patrick won't wake up and discover it was all a dream. There will be consequences."

TV Guide Magazine spoke with Baker to get his take on the daring cliffhanger and where his show is headed from here. Will that impish little devil Patrick Jane ever be able to charm us again?

Photobucket

... TV Guide Magazine: He certainly can't claim to have killed in self defense.

Baker: "And how do you get around that? There are too many witnesses who saw him go after Red John. I had some issues with the way the killing was originally written, which had Red John getting up and walking away and my character shooting him in the back three times. That wouldn't have been fulfilling enough for Jane. The whole idea of vengeance is the fulfillment factor! Patrick had already said in a really powerful scene in Season 1, "When I find him I'm going to cut him open and watch him die." A big part of the show — and the fan speculation — has always been whether or not Patrick really has what it takes to carry out that threat. Does he actually have it in him? So we played around with the scene. My idea was that Red John talks about how the wife and child smelled and it just cripples Jane. You see him go from this guy who's this close to having his vengeance, having his closure, and he just crumbles into a bit of a paralyzed mess. Then Red John walks away. Jane says, "Please, wait." Almost like he needs to hear more detail. I've always played the murders as still being so raw, so present, despite Jane's bravado. I like the perverseness of him needing to hear more, as macabre as it is. So Jane goes up to him and looks like he's shattered, then when he gets this close to Red John, the need for cold revenge kicks in. And he's thinking, "Not only am I going to kill you, I am going to mind f--k you at the same time." I wanted the audience to still think in that moment that, despite all Jane's talk, he just can't kill Red John. But then he does! It's very operatic. Bruno loved the idea..."
